Double Sided Timing Belts

Double Sided Timing Belts:

Double sided timing belts are timing belts that have teeth on both sides of the belt. They can give power to engines from either side of the belt and are often used in instances of reversing.

Double sided timing belts are made from the same material as timing belts, rubber reinforced with high-tensile fibers inside to help the belt withstand high-intensity conditions. The backsides of double toothed belts are also reinforced with fibers and a special kind of rubber to make the belt last longer. You can differentiate double sided timing belts from regular timing belts by the “D” that comes before the classification number. (i.e. D1036-14M-115.)

Timing belts are used in engines to synchronize the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft. This ensures that the engine’s valves are opening and closing at the appropriate times for each cylinder’s exhaust stroke and intake. In certain engines, like the interference engine, timing belts are crucial to stopping the piston from hitting the valves.

Most vehicles on the road today use timing belts in their engines. Timing belts normally have teeth on one side (the inside) of the belt that helps the belt grip the surface it is on. The teeth turn the camshafts in time with the crankshafts which then open and close the engine’s valves at the proper times. In four-stroke engines, double sided toothed belts open the valves the once every other revolution, which is what is required for that kind of engine.

When the time comes for the timing belt to be replaced, it must be replaced carefully to ensure that the camshafts and crankshafts are still synchronized to prevent the valves from hitting the pistons. If the valves hit the pistons, the valves will become bent and will need to be replaced as well. This can happen if the timing belt breaks, as well as if it is not properly installed.

Timing belts should be replaced according to the owner’s manual, which is usually every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Timing belts are typically made out of rubber with high-tensile fibers inside to make them withstand high-intensity environments and serve a longer belt life.
